Minyue

Minyue

Minyue (民乐, "people's music") is the term adopted in mainland China after 1949 for music composed and arranged for traditional Chinese instruments — the repertory of the modern Chinese orchestra and its soloists, called guoyue in earlier decades and still so in Taiwan. Its forces are a symphony-sized ensemble of erhu, pipa, dizi, sheng, yangqin and guzheng families, and its canon joins arranged folk melodies to new programme works by figures such as *Liu Tianhua*, *Abing* and the arranger-conductor *Peng Xiuwen*. It is the primary form in which traditional Chinese music is taught, broadcast and exported.
