Mod

Mod is the British youth culture and music of the 1960s named for its adherents' devotion to modernism: sharp Italian tailoring, scooters, all-night dancing and a soundtrack of American rhythm and blues, soul and jazz alongside British beat groups. Its flagship bands, *The Who*, the *Small Faces* and *The Kinks*, turned the mod experience - style, generational conflict, weekend release - into song, and 'My Generation' fixed the subculture's defiance in the wider imagination. A late-1970s revival led by *The Jam* renewed the sound for the punk generation, and mod codes of dress and taste have recurred in British youth culture ever since.
