Modal Jazz

Emerging from the theoretical work of composer George Russell, modal jazz re-orients improvisation away from dense chord progressions and towards a framework of musical scales, or modes. This approach, codified on the 1959 #Columbia Records# release "Kind of Blue" by *Miles Davis*, creates a spacious, contemplative sonic texture. Soloists are granted greater melodic freedom, exploring thematic development over static harmonic backdrops.
