Modern Dancehall

Modern dancehall, often called bashment, is the form of Jamaican dancehall music consolidated from the late 1990s onward, built on highly energetic, computer-programmed riddims voiced by deejays in sound-system style. Where the 1980s digital revolution established the template, the modern era refined it into sparse, hard-hitting productions with hook-centred choruses and an explicit orientation toward the dancefloor, generating named dances and reload-driven performances. Through *Sean Paul*, *Shaggy* and *Damian Marley* it achieved sustained global chart success, and its rhythmic and vocal patterns have been absorbed into international pop, hip hop and Afrobeats.
