Modular Synth

Modular synth music is electronic music composed on modular synthesisers — instruments assembled from separate voltage-controlled modules patched together with cables — and shaped by the generative, semi-unpredictable behaviour those systems encourage. Pioneered on Buchla and Moog systems by *Morton Subotnick*, whose "Silver Apples of the Moon" (1967) was the first electronic album written for the record medium, and by *Suzanne Ciani*, the practice was revived by the Eurorack boom of the 2010s. *Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith*, *Emily A. Sprague*, *Caterina Barbieri* and *Alessandro Cortini* lead a field spanning ambient drift, sequenced pattern music and drone.
