Mongolian Music

Mongolian music spans the throat singing, long song and horsehead-fiddle traditions of the steppe and their modern electric descendants. At its core are khöömii overtone singing, the urtyn duu (long song) with its vast ornamented phrases, and the morin khuur fiddle — sounds tied to herding life, horses and Naadam festivals. Since the 1990s, groups such as *Hanggai*, *Egschiglen* and *The Hu* have fused these materials with rock, metal and folk, with *The Hu*'s "The Gereg" (2019) topping the #Billboard# World Albums chart. The tradition remains a living national emblem of Mongolia and Inner Mongolia.
