Morna

Morna is the national song form of Cape Verde, a slow, melancholic genre sung in Cape Verdean Creole and built on the harmonic cycles of the guitar, cavaquinho, violin and piano. Its central subject is sodade, the longing felt by emigrants and by those they leave behind. *Ces谩ria 脡vora* carried morna from Mindelo's bars to the world after "Miss Perfumado" (1992), winning the form international recognition while keeping its intimate scale. Earlier masters such as *Bana* and the composer *Manuel de Novas* defined its repertoire, and younger singers including *Lura* and *Mayra Andrade* continue it.
