Murga

Murga is a form of popular carnival theatre practised in Uruguay, Argentina and parts of Spain, in which a costumed choir of around thirteen to seventeen singers performs satirical songs over a small percussion battery. Derived from the chirigota troupes of C谩diz and transplanted to Montevideo in the early 20th century, the Uruguayan murga sings in forceful, nasal unison and close harmony, presenting an annual show of presentation songs, satirical couplets on the year's events and a farewell that mixes political critique, humour and local identity. Competing at neighbourhood stages called tablados, murgas are a central institution of the world's longest carnival.
