Música de intervenção

Música de intervenção

Música de intervenção ('intervention music') is the Portuguese protest-song movement of the 1960s and 1970s, in which singer-songwriters used song as a weapon against the Estado Novo dictatorship and its colonial wars in Africa. Led by *José Afonso*, *José Mário Branco* and *Sérgio Godinho*, it set literary Portuguese verse — much of it censored or circulated clandestinely — to folk-derived melodies and spare acoustic accompaniment. Its songs became the soundtrack of the opposition, and *José Afonso*'s "Grândola, Vila Morena" served as a broadcast signal for the Carnation Revolution of 25 April 1974.
