Mutant Disco

Mutant disco is the dance music that emerged from New York's downtown underground at the turn of the 1980s, when the city's no wave and post-punk musicians absorbed the pulse of disco and funk and bent it into eccentric shapes. Named by #ZE Records# after its 1981 compilation "Mutant Disco: A Subtle Discolation of the Norm", the style pairs tight, groove-led rhythm sections with abrasive guitars, deadpan or camp delivery, Latin percussion and deliberate oddity. Acts such as *Liquid Liquid*, *Lizzy Mercier Descloux* and *Was (Not Was)* treated the dancefloor as a laboratory, keeping disco's physical momentum while discarding its polish and glamour.
