Muziki Wa Dansi

Muziki wa dansi is Tanzania's classic dance-band music: Swahili-language guitar bands modeled on Congolese rumba and big-band jazz, built around interlocking lead and rhythm guitars, horn arrangements, and close vocal harmonies. From the 1960s through the 1980s, government- and parastatal-sponsored orchestras such as *DDC Mlimani Park Orchestra*, *Orchestra Maquis Original*, and *Vijana Jazz* filled dance halls in Dar es Salaam, each band cultivating a named mtindo, or style, that fans identified on sight. Polished, melodic, and made for dancing, dansi is the foundational popular music of post-independence Tanzania.
