Nahua Music

Nahua music is the musical heritage of the Nahua peoples of central Mexico, heirs of the Aztec world: the sung poetry preserved in the Cantares Mexicanos, colonial-era song in Nahuatl, and the living village traditions of Morelos, Guerrero, Puebla and the Huasteca, where violin, guitar and voice carry wedding songs, sones and devotional pieces in Nahuatl and Spanish. Suppressed and scattered after the conquest, it survives more as text, festival practice and field recording than as a discography. Its best-known modern bearers are *Rockercoatl* of Puebla, who since 2000 have written and performed original rock songs in Nahuatl.
