Nature Ambient

Nature ambient is the branch of ambient music built from field recordings of the natural world, in which birdsong, water, wind, insects and other biophonic and geophonic sounds form the substance of the work rather than decoration. Practitioners record with specialised microphones over long durations and present the results unedited, layered or lightly treated, treating the soundscape itself as composition. The practice descends from acoustic ecology and the *World Soundscape Project*, was popularised by *Irv Teibel's* Environments series from 1969, and now spans scientific archives, experimental releases by recordists such as *Chris Watson* and *Jana Winderen*, and functional audio for rest and concentration.
