Neo-Canterbury

Neo-Canterbury

Neo-Canterbury is the contemporary continuation of the Canterbury scene, the English progressive rock style of the late 1960s and 1970s associated with *Soft Machine*, *Caravan* and *Hatfield and the North*. Later groups, most of them outside England, adopt its grammar — fuzz organ and electric piano, jazz-inflected harmony, odd time signatures, whimsical humour and pastoral melodicism — while writing new material rather than recreating the original records. Acts such as *Zopp* in England, *Homunculus Res* in Italy, *Amoeba Split* in Spain and *Needlepoint* in Norway lead an international field documented in the Facelift archive's Canterbury 2.0 coverage.
