Neo-City Pop

Neo-City Pop

Neo-city pop is the 2010s revival of Japanese city pop, the polished urban pop of the late 1970s and 1980s, by a generation of Japanese and international artists raised on its reissues and internet circulation. Bands such as *cero*, *KIRINJI* and *Suchmos* reproduce the original idiom's jazz- and funk-inflected harmony, soft-rock instrumentation and night-city imagery with contemporary production, while Western acts including *Ginger Root* adopt its melodic language wholesale. The revival treats city pop not as retro pastiche but as a living songwriting grammar for sophisticated, groove-based pop.
