Neurofunk

Neurofunk is a subgenre of drum and bass that emerged in the late 1990s, defined by dark, technically exacting production: basslines built from heavily resampled and modulated waveforms, sharp synthetic stabs, and drums edited to a hard, mechanical precision. Where earlier jungle emphasised chopped breakbeats, neurofunk foregrounds sound design, with mutating low-end patterns carrying the melodic interest over sparse, minor-key atmospheres. Developed by British pioneers and later refined by Dutch and German producers, it became the dominant form of technical drum and bass in clubs and at festivals during the 2000s and 2010s, prized for its controlled aggression and studio virtuosity.
