New York Drill

New York Drill

New York drill is the Brooklyn-centred form of drill that emerged at the end of the 2010s, when young New York rappers adopted the sliding 808s, dark minor-key melodies and stuttering hi-hat patterns of UK drill production. *Pop Smoke* defined the style with "Welcome to the Party" and the "Meet the Woo" tapes, his deep, gravelled delivery gliding over beats by British producers such as *808Melo*. The music documents street and gang life in Brooklyn with unusual directness, and its dances and slang spread through social video as the style reached national charts.
