Ngoma

Ngoma

Ngoma is the drum-dance complex at the centre of musical life across Swahili-speaking East Africa, above all Tanzania: the word names at once the drum, the dance and the whole occasion. Local troupes of master drummers, dancers and singers perform named repertories — chakacha and lelemama on the coast, mdundiko in Dar es Salaam, and dozens of upcountry styles — for weddings, initiation, harvest and national celebration. Sung texts carry praise, news and social satire over interlocking drum patterns; since independence the Tanzanian state has treated ngoma as the bedrock of national culture, and its troupes remain community institutions rather than recording acts.
