Nortec

Nortec is an electronic music movement from Tijuana, Mexico, named by fusing norteño and techno: the brass, accordion and bajo sexto samples of norteño and banda music are cut into house, techno and electro frameworks by a loose collective of producers and visual artists. Emerging in 1999 with the *Nortec Collective*, it made the border city itself its subject — its sound systems, taxi horns, dance halls and street life — and paired the music with a graphic design language drawn from Tijuana signage and norteño poster art.
