North Asian Music

North Asian music is a geographic umbrella for the traditional and contemporary music of Siberia, the Russian Far East, Mongolia and the steppe and taiga peoples between them. Its best-known export is throat singing — khöömei — in which a single voice produces a drone and a flute-like overtone melody at once, performed by *Huun-Huur-Tu*, *Alash* and *Chirgilchin* with horsehead fiddles, lutes and jaw harps. Around that core sit Sakha, Buryat and Evenk traditions, shamanic ritual song and a modern wave running from *Yat-Kha*'s punk fusions to *The Hu*'s stadium folk metal. The category groups by region and shared nomadic heritage rather than by a single style.
