Northern Soul

Northern soul is the British club movement, centred on the north and midlands of England from the late 1960s, devoted to obscure and uptempo American soul records of the mid-1960s. Its DJs and dancers prized fast, Motown-modelled singles that had failed commercially in the United States, building an all-night dance culture, the Twisted Wheel, Blackpool Mecca and Wigan Casino, around their rarity, with athletic spins, kicks and backdrops performed to a relentless beat. Singles such as *Frank Wilson's* "Do I Love You (Indeed I Do)" became five-figure artefacts, and the movement's reissue archaeology reshaped how soul history itself is catalogued.
