Nueva canci贸n

Nueva canci贸n, 'new song', is a Latin American movement of folk-based songwriting that emerged in the 1960s, joining traditional instruments and forms to lyrics of social justice, anti-imperialism and cultural affirmation. Its singers, often accompanying themselves on guitar with Andean instruments such as quena, zampo帽a and charango, treated song as testimony and political education, drawing on rural folklore rather than commercial pop. Centred in Chile, Argentina, Cuba and Uruguay, the movement was driven into exile or silence by the military regimes of the 1970s, and its martyrs and survivors made it the enduring conscience of Latin American song.
