Nueva canción española

Nueva canción española

Nueva canción española is the Spanish 'new song' movement that emerged in the 1960s as a counterpart to Latin America's nueva canción, using the singer-songwriter format to contest the Franco dictatorship and to recover Spain's suppressed regional cultures. It began with Catalonia's Nova Cançó and the collective Els Setze Jutges (1961), whose members included *Raimon* and the young *Joan Manuel Serrat*, and spread through Basque, Galician, Castilian and Andalusian scenes. Setting major poets — Machado, Hernández, Lorca — to music became its signature act of cultural resistance.
