Nueva cumbia chilena

Nueva cumbia chilena

Nueva cumbia chilena, or new Chilean cumbia, is the twenty-first-century revival of cumbia in Chile, built by young bands who fused the classic Chilean and Colombian dance format with cumbia villera, Peruvian chicha, ska, rock and hip hop. Played by large ensembles with brass, electric guitars, keyboards and full percussion sections, it keeps cumbia's loping dance pulse as a base for songs about neighbourhood life, football, work and celebration. Acts such as *Chico Trujillo*, *Juana Fe* and *Santa Feria* carried the style from student parties to Chile's largest festivals, making it the defining popular dance music of its generation.
