Occitan Folk Music

Occitan folk music is the traditional and revival music of Occitania, the southern third of France where Occitan and its dialects are spoken. It draws on medieval troubadour song, Pyrenean and Proven莽al dance music, polyphonic singing and instruments such as the hurdy-gurdy, bodega bagpipe, fifre and three-hole flute. The N貌va Can莽on movement of the 1960s and 1970s, led by singers like *Mart铆* and the group *Nadau*, fused folk repertoire with language activism, and later acts including *Massilia Sound System* and *San Salvador* have renewed it with reggae, electronic production and intense a cappella polyphony.
