Oceanian Music

An umbrella category for the musics of Australia, New Zealand (Aotearoa) and the Pacific Islands, spanning Aboriginal Australian songline traditions and didgeridoo playing, M膩ori haka and waiata, and the string-band and choir traditions of Polynesia and Melanesia. Its recorded form ranges from ceremonial documentation to contemporary fusions in which *Yothu Yindi*, *Archie Roach* and *Te Vaka* combine ancestral instruments, languages and chant with rock, pop and electronic production, carrying Indigenous languages and land-based narratives into international circulation, where they now anchor festivals, curricula and national ceremonies.
