Operatic Pop

Operatic Pop

Operatic pop, often shortened to popera, is a style of popular music in which classically trained voices perform accessible, song-based material with full orchestral backing. Singers such as *Andrea Bocelli*, *Sarah Brightman* and *Luciano Pavarotti* apply operatic technique — sustained vibrato, projection and Italianate phrasing — to ballads, film themes and light classical melodies rather than to complete operas. Arrangements favour strings, piano and chorus over rhythm sections, and the repertoire moves between original songs, popularised arias and crossover duets. The style is defined by this meeting of conservatory vocalism and mainstream songcraft: aria-sized emotion delivered within the span of a pop single.
