Orchestral Song

The orchestral song is a setting of lyric poetry for solo voice and orchestra, as distinct from the piano-accompanied Lied. It flourished in the late Romantic period, when composers sought symphonic scale and colour for intimate texts: *Gustav Mahler* built much of his output on orchestral settings of the folk anthology Des Knaben Wunderhorn and of *Friedrich Rückert*, while *Richard Strauss* crowned the genre with the "Four Last Songs" of 1948. The voice is treated neither as operatic protagonist nor as chamber partner but as first instrument of the orchestra, its line woven into an expansive, illustrative accompaniment.
