Pacific Reggae

Pacific Reggae

Pacific reggae is the reggae tradition of New Zealand and the wider South Pacific, created from the late 1970s by M膩ori and Pasifika musicians who fused Jamaican roots reggae and dub with Polynesian languages, choral singing and local dance rhythms. Warm, bass-led grooves, close group harmonies and keyboards carry songs in English, te reo M膩ori and Pacific languages that address land, faith, family and indigenous rights, making reggae one of the defining popular sounds of Aotearoa and a shared idiom across the Pacific islands.
