Pagode

Pagode is a Brazilian samba style and social gathering that crystallised in Rio de Janeiro in the late 1970s around the Cacique de Ramos carnival block. Musicians including *Fundo de Quintal* rebuilt the samba ensemble with new instruments, the banjo adapted by *Almir Guineto*, the hand-played tant茫 drum and the repique de m茫o, producing a lighter, swinging party samba sung in chorus. Romantic pagode offshoots dominated Brazilian popular music in the 1990s, but the name still denotes the roda de samba tradition from which they came.
