Piano Rock

Originating from the percussive, boogie-woogie-inflected piano work of early rock and roll pioneers, Piano Rock established itself as a distinct subgenre in the 1970s. It re-centers the musical framework around the piano or electric piano, displacing the electric guitar as the primary harmonic and melodic driver. The resulting sonic texture ranges from rhythmically aggressive to lyrically ornate, often employing classically influenced chord progressions and arrangements. This shift frequently foregrounds the artist's vocal and narrative performance, contributing to the genre's strong association with the singer-songwriter movement and its sustained commercial presence through subsequent decades.
