Piano Trio

Piano Trio

The piano trio is jazz's most durable small-group format: piano, double bass and drums in continuous three-way dialogue. Codified in the 1950s by *Ahmad Jamal*, *Erroll Garner* and the *Oscar Peterson Trio*, it reached a turning point with the *Bill Evans Trio*, whose equal-voice interplay on "Sunday at the Village Vanguard" and "Waltz for Debby" (1961) recast the bass and drums as melodic partners. From hard bop and standards interpretation to the rock-inflected work of *Esbj枚rn Svensson Trio* and *The Bad Plus*, the format balances harmonic sophistication, rhythmic flexibility and an intimacy no larger group reproduces.
