Pinoy Folk Rock

Pinoy Folk Rock

Pinoy folk rock is the Filipino fusion of folk songwriting and rock instrumentation that emerged in the 1970s, sung mainly in Tagalog and other Philippine languages. Built on acoustic guitar, close harmonies and the melodic inheritance of the *kundiman*, it gave the era's social commentary a radio-friendly form: *Asin* sang of the environment and the homeland, *Freddie Aguilar* turned a parable of a wayward child into "Anak", the best-selling Philippine recording of its time, and *Florante* and *Heber Bartolome* wrote national allegory into everyday scenes. It became the musical voice of protest under martial law and of the 1986 EDSA crowds.
