Pop-Folk

Pop-Folk

Pop-folk is the commercial mainstream of the post-Yugoslav Balkans: folk melody, ornamented singing and accordion or brass colouring fused with dance-pop and electronic production, sold through spectacle, television and streaming. Descended from Yugoslav newly composed folk music and the turbo-folk of the 1990s, it shed the older style's war-era associations while keeping its emotional directness, and it dominates charts and clubs from Belgrade to the diaspora. Its current stars — *Aleksandra Prijović*, *Tea Tairović*, *Maya Berović*, *Breskvica* — command the region's largest audiences. It is distinct from the Anglo-American folk-pop filed elsewhere in this registry under the reversed name.
