Pop-Funk

Pop-Funk

Pop-funk is the meeting of funk rhythm and pop songcraft: syncopated bass lines, rhythm guitar chanks, brass stabs and dancefloor grooves arranged into concise, hook-led songs with mass-market choruses. Its foundations were laid in the late 1970s by *Chic*, *Earth, Wind & Fire* and *Michael Jackson*'s "Off the Wall", and by *Prince*, who folded funk into new wave and rock. After a 1990s retreat, the formula returned to the centre of pop in the 2010s through *Daft Punk*'s "Random Access Memories", *Mark Ronson* and *Bruno Mars*'s 'Uptown Funk', *Dua Lipa*'s "Future Nostalgia" and the *Silk Sonic* project, making funk's vocabulary a default language of mainstream dance-pop.
