Porro

Porro is a big-band dance genre from Colombia's Caribbean savanna region of Sucre, C贸rdoba and Bol铆var, and one of the foundational styles of Colombian tropical music. Modelled in part on European military bands, a porro orchestra sets clarinets and saxophones against a full brass choir of trumpets and euphoniums, driven by tambora, snare drum and cymbals, in a swinging binary metre suited to outdoor fiesta dancing. Its two broad manners, the slower porro tapao and the livelier porro palitiao, were carried nationwide from the 1940s by the orchestras of *Lucho Berm煤dez* and *Pacho Gal谩n* and by the wind bands of San Pelayo, home of the Festival Nacional del Porro.
