Post-Black Metal

Post-black metal is a style of heavy metal that fuses black metal's tremolo-picked guitars, blast beats and shrieked vocals with the dynamics and textures of post-rock, shoegaze and ambient music. Where traditional black metal prizes rawness and confrontation, post-black metal favours immersion and emotional catharsis: riffs unfold in long, crescendoing arcs, harsh passages alternate with clean, reverberant interludes, and production is comparatively polished. Formed in France and the United States during the 2000s, the style, often overlapping with blackgaze, brought black metal techniques to audiences far outside the metal underground.
