Progressive death metal

Progressive death metal

Progressive death metal is a fusion style that subjects death metal's growled vocals, distortion and rhythmic violence to progressive rock's long forms, odd meters and dynamic range. *Death* opened the path with "Symbolic", while *Atheist* and *Cynic* injected jazz fusion on "Unquestionable Presence" and "Focus", and *Opeth* contrasted brutality with acoustic folk passages on "Blackwater Park". Later acts including *Gorguts*, *Ulcerate* and *Blood Incantation* pushed the style toward dissonance, atmosphere and cosmic themes, making it death metal's most compositionally ambitious branch.
