Proto-Punk

Proto-Punk

Proto-punk designates a loose affiliation of rock musicians from the mid-1960s to the mid-1970s who anticipated the ethos and aesthetics of punk rock. Emerging from the raw energy of American garage rock, the sonic art experiments of the Velvet Underground, and the confrontational performances of Detroit's MC5 and The Stooges, the form is defined by a deliberate rejection of contemporary rock's perceived bombast. It is characterized by stripped-down, guitar-driven arrangements, often employing distortion and feedback. The genre's anti-establishment lyrical themes and minimalist aggression shaped the subsequent punk movement, serving as its direct musical and ideological blueprint before punk's commercial breakthrough.
