Psybient

Psybient

Psybient, also called psychill or psychedelic ambient, is a downtempo electronic style that transfers the sound world of psychedelic trance, synthetic arpeggios, modulated pads, sampled voices and world instruments, to slow, spacious compositions intended as immersive journeys rather than dance tracks. Beats, when present, move at roughly 90 to 120 BPM beneath layers of evolving texture, ethnic instrumentation and nature samples. The genre crystallised in the late 1990s around the chill-out rooms of the goa and psytrance scenes, with *Shpongle*, the project of *Simon Posford* and *Raja Ram*, as its most widely recognised exponent.
