Psychedelic Indie

Psychedelic Indie

Psychedelic indie is the psychedelic turn taken by independent rock in the 2000s and 2010s: guitar bands and studio auteurs filtering 1960s psychedelia through indie rock's means, with reversed and phaser-washed guitars, vintage keyboards, hypnotic grooves and vocals adrift in echo. It crystallised around *MGMT*'s "Oracular Spectacular" (2007), *Animal Collective*'s "Merriweather Post Pavilion" (2009) and the work of *Tame Impala*, the one-man project whose "Lonerism" (2012) and "Currents" (2015) carried the sound to festival scale. Distinct from the earlier neo-psychedelia revival, it is psychedelia rebuilt by the blog-era indie generation.
