Psychedelic Prog

A strand of progressive rock in which the psychedelic inheritance of the late 1960s — improvisation, studio effects, cosmic and fantastic imagery — is carried into long, composed forms. Bands such as *Pink Floyd*, *Hawkwind*, *Gong* and *Nektar* stretched songs into suites and concept pieces built on Mellotron, organ and early synthesizers, while retaining the trance-like repetition and timbral experimentation of psychedelia. Where mainstream progressive rock emphasised virtuoso display, psychedelic prog prized atmosphere, drift and altered states, a balance that later fed space rock and stoner rock.
