Psychedelic Rap

Psychedelic rap is a strain of hip hop that adapts the sound and outlook of psychedelic rock and funk to rap production: warped and reversed samples, heavy effects processing, cosmic and absurdist imagery, and beats that drift, stutter or dissolve rather than loop cleanly. It emerged in the late 1980s with *De La Soul* and the *Beastie Boys*, was developed in the 1990s by *The Pharcyde*, *Digable Planets* and *OutKast*, and expanded in the 2010s through *Shabazz Palaces*, *Chance the Rapper* and *Flatbush Zombies*, whose work treats altered perception as both subject and method.
