Psytrance

Psytrance, short for psychedelic trance, is a form of trance music that developed out of Goa trance in the mid-1990s. It is built on a driving four-on-the-floor kick at roughly 135–150 BPM, a rolling, offbeat bassline, and dense layers of hypnotic synthesizer sequences, acid lines, sampled voices and atmospheric effects arranged in long, continuously evolving tracks. Melodies tend toward minor-key, Eastern-inflected and science-fiction motifs, and vocals are rare beyond processed samples. Codified by *Hallucinogen*'s "Twisted" and the Israeli scene around *Astral Projection* and *Infected Mushroom*, psytrance sustains a global festival culture oriented toward collective, trance-state dancing.
