Punk Rock

Emerging from mid-1970s proto-punk and garage rock, Punk Rock is a rock subgenre defined by its minimalist and confrontational ethos. Sonically, it utilizes a framework of distorted electric guitars playing simple power chord riffs, driving root-note basslines, and fast, unadorned drum patterns. Vocals are typically shouted, sneering, or declamatory, delivering lyrics centered on social critique, alienation, and anti-establishment sentiment. The genre's Do-It-Yourself (DIY) spirit shaped an independent infrastructure of labels and venues, influencing subsequent alternative music movements even as some of its practitioners achieved mainstream commercial recognition.
