Purple Sound

Purple sound, also called purple or "purple wow", is a style of dubstep that emerged in Bristol in the late 2000s around the producers *Joker*, *Gemmy* and *Guido*. Against the darkness then dominant in dubstep, purple sound is maximalist and melodic: luminous synthesizer leads indebted to G-funk and video-game music, cascading arpeggios, funk and R&B harmony, and heavy sub-bass at the standard 140 BPM. Named for the synaesthetic colour its makers associated with the music, the style was codified by singles on labels such as #Kapsize# and #Hyperdub# and by the 2012 compilation "Purple Legacy: A History of Purple WOW".
