Ragam Tanam Pallavi

The most demanding improvisational form of the Carnatic concert, testing a performer's command of a ragam across three successive stages: ragam, an unmetered melodic exposition (alapana); tanam, a rhythmically pulsing elaboration still without percussion; and pallavi, the improvisation of a single composed line through melodic variation (niraval) and solfa passages (kalpana swaras), often across multiple tala cycles and speeds. Reserved for the centre of a full concert, it is the traditional proving ground of vocalists and instrumentalists such as *Madurai Mani Iyer* and *M. L. Vasanthakumari*.
