Ragga Jungle

Ragga Jungle

Ragga jungle is the strain of British jungle that fused breakbeat hardcore with Jamaican dancehall and soundsystem culture in the early 1990s. Chopped Amen breaks at around 160 beats per minute collide with reggae basslines, gunshot and airhorn samples, and full dancehall vocals from MCs such as *General Levy*, *Top Cat* and *Congo Natty*. Where much jungle was instrumental, ragga jungle put the ragga voice at the centre, sampling or recording Jamaican and British deejays over the breaks. It dominated London pirate radio and raves in 1993-1995 and supplied jungle's first mainstream chart hits.
