Rapso

Rapso

Rapso is a Trinidadian genre fusing the declamatory delivery of rap and dub poetry with calypso and soca rhythms, created in the 1970s as the musical voice of Trinidad and Tobago's Black Power movement. Its performers chant poetic, socially conscious verse over calypso band arrangements and, later, drum-machine riddims, a form *Lancelot Layne* originated and *Brother Resistance* and the *Network Riddim Band* carried into the 1980s with records such as "Busting Out" and "Rapso Takeover". Rapso remains the conscious wing of Trinidadian music, sustained by *3canal*, *Ataklan* and an annual festival culture centred on Port of Spain.
