Rasin

Rasin

Rasin, or mizik rasin, is the Haitian roots music movement that fused the ritual drumming and chant of Vodou with rock, reggae and funk instrumentation. Emerging in the late 1980s as Haiti emerged from the Duvalier dictatorship, rasin bands placed tanbou drums and rara horns alongside electric guitars and keyboards, sang in Haitian Creole, and addressed politics, poverty and Vodou spirituality directly. *Boukman Eksperyans*, named for the priest who opened the Haitian Revolution, became the movement's international flagship, followed by *Boukan Ginen* and *RAM*, and rasin remains the principal vehicle for roots and carnival music in Haiti.
